Research indicates that cases of mouth cancer are increasing, but early detection significantly improves the chances of successful treatment and recovery. Mouth cancer screening is a quick and simple procedure conducted at our dental practice. It involves a comprehensive examination of your entire mouth, including the use of a handheld scanning device to assess any lumps, lesions, or areas of concern. This helps identify potential risk factors, enabling us to provide prompt treatment or referral if necessary.
We recommend annual mouth cancer screenings for all patients. However, it’s crucial to schedule an appointment sooner if you notice any sores, lumps, or long-term ulcers in your mouth, regardless of their size. Late detection of mouth cancer has unfortunately resulted in a higher proportion of deaths per number of cases compared to other cancers like breast cancer, cervical cancer, or skin melanoma. In the UK, there are approximately 3,000 deaths annually attributed to mouth cancer.
As smoking is a major risk factor for mouth cancer and other oral health issues, we strongly encourage our patients to quit. For further information and support, the Mouth Cancer Foundation is an excellent resource.
At All Smiles, we’re dedicated to ensuring our patients feel comfortable and confident during their dental visits. A key part of this commitment is providing clear and thorough explanations of all procedures, helping to eliminate any anxieties about the unknown and empowering our patients to make informed decisions about their care.
